Delivering in uncertain times
The event was described as follows:
When we are faced with what seems like ever-escalating uncertainty, both inside and outside our organisations, how do we solve deep problems and continue to deliver with confidence?
The best leaders demonstrate the right balance of being able to move forward boldly, while remaining adaptable to changing circumstances. This sounds all very well in theory, but what does it look like in practice? And how do we know, moment to moment, what action to take, especially when the stakes look high and there is an imperative to act quickly.
In this facilitated discussion we will consider three core questions that emerging leaders can ask that will equip them and their teams for implementation in uncertain times.
- What is the best approach to making decisions in high-stakes and ambiguous situations?
- What is the key to maintaining performance and motivation when we are facing rapid or large-scale change?
- How do I manage effectively in an increasingly uncertain world?
Cathy’s talk was really interesting and generated a lot of questions from the audience. Although I think some of the advice about ‘getting comfortable with uncertainty’ and ‘training yourself to believe that your wellbeing is not attached to your circumstances’, may take some practice!

Attendees were encouraged to feedback future event ideas.
During my time at DCMS I’ve been lucky enough to attend WIG events on Brexit and hear from Ben at Ipsos Mori. The programme covers highly topical issues with great content and speakers. In addition, the events I’ve attended have always been great for networking. I’ve met people from other government departments and public bodies, as well as banks and cement companies.
I’m glad to say that my new employer, the Metropolitan Police are also members and hope to see you at another event soon!
